Who is Elsa Dutton to John Dutton? ›

Elsa is the sister of John Dutton Senior, but her relationship with Costner's character is more complicated. As John Dutton Junior came into the mix, Elsa is Costner's character's great aunt.

The Ilbert Bill was a controversial piece of legislation. It was introduced in 1883 by the British Viceroy of India, Lord Ripon. The bill sought to remove the racial bar in the Code of Criminal Procedure, which prevented Indian judges from trying European defendants.

Filming on the series started in August 2021 in Texas and concluded in Montana in January 2022. Scenes that took place in urban centers were filmed in Dallas, Texas, Fort Worth, Texas and Granbury, Texas. Also, a new, permanent, Western town with 26 structures was built at the Yellowstone Film Ranch.

James Dutton

He's married to Margaret, and they have three children: Elsa, Spencer, and John Dutton Sr. The character is also seen during flashback scenes in season 4 of Yellowstone. James has two siblings: Claire, who shares the screen in 1883, and Jacob, who makes his appearance in 1923.

Spencer Dutton is the younger son of James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) from the 1883 series. He is also the younger brother of John Dutton Sr (James Badge Dale). As James Dutton from 1883 was John Dutton's great-grandfather, this makes Spencer one of John's grandfathers.

James later dies in 1893 after being shot by horse thieves. The temporal gap between 1883 and 1923 is obviously 40 years. The plot gap between these two dates is also something pretty large. At some point, James' brother, Jacob, takes charge of the Yellowstone and turns the land into a small empire.

Fans of 1883 will remember John Dutton Sr. as a little boy, but by 1923, James and Margaret Dutton's eldest son is all grown up. Through his son, Jack, he's potentially the great-grandfather of Yellowstone's John, but the show hasn't yet confirmed anything on that front yet.

Spencer Dutton

Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) is John and Elsa's brother in 1923, and the character who is currently hunting lions abroad. Spencer was apparently born sometime after James and Margaret settled in Montana and was not featured as a baby back in 1883.

However, Elsa dies from an arrow shot during an attack on the family's wagon train, and the couple never reunite. She chooses her burial spot to be in Paradise Valley, which eventually becomes the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Yellowstone viewers were introduced to his elderly father, John Dutton Sr., played by Dabney Coleman, in a season two flashback. John's mother has yet to appear or be named.
